Step-by-step: Renew your business in Minnesota
Most businesses in Hennepin County must file an annual renewal with the Minnesota Secretary of State by December 31 to stay active.
The process is simple, no cost for most entities, and can be completed online with 10 quick steps. Renewing ensures your business remains legally recognized in the state, prevents statutory dissolution (which would require reinstatement filings and fees), and ensures you remain in good standing for contracts, financing, licensing, and many Elevate Hennepin resources.
Step-by-step
To renew online in just a few minutes, go to the Secretary of State website and follow these steps:
- Click on “renew a business”
- Choose to renew online
- Enter your account (or create a new account)
- Under “File” in the "Business" column select "New business, amendment, annual renewal or reinstatement"
- Find your business via the search bar
- Click on the word "details" associated with your business
- At the top of the details page, click the grey button titled "file amendment/renewal"
- Choose annual renewal for $0
- Follow the prompts to enter your NIACS code and other requested information
- Ensure that everything is correct on your details page and click submit.
Soon after you file, you should receive an email noting that your business has been renewed for another year.
