February is Shop Local Month in Hennepin County
Hennepin County has proclaimed February as Shop Local Month in partnership with the State of Minnesota.
Shopping or dining at one of our immigrant-owned businesses is one way we can stand with our neighbors and show support for the businesses that contribute so much to our community.
“We're encouraging all residents to support small locally owned businesses, particularly those who have reduced foot traffic and heightened fear and uncertainty due to the ongoing federal immigration enforcement presence in our county,” said Hennepin County Commissioner Debbie Goettel at a recent board meeting.
The federal immigration enforcement surge has caused major disruptions, loss of revenue, and fear in the Hennepin County business community. While the impacts have been severe, small businesses have rallied to support their local communities and offer mutual aid, even as their revenues and customer traffic has dropped.
“We are incredibly proud of our local business community. They are the economic driver of our county and as such are the economic driver of our state,” said County Commissioner Angela Conley. “We are grateful for everything that they do to support and uplift our community now and every single day. To any residents who are watching today, the call to action is we want you to support your local businesses as you are able.”
